Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Ear surgery is performed to correct prominent ears or ears that appear too large. Often we remove some cartilage and reshape the ear to have a more natural shape and to sit closer to the scalp. This can be done as early as age 6-8 but often is pursued in the teenage years.

Anesthesia: Local or IV Sedation or General
Operative Time: 2 hours
Incisions: Behind the ear in a natural crease
Drains: None
Recovery Timeline:

  • 1 week – Suture removal; Typical time to return to school
  • 2-3 weeks – Major swelling resolves
  • 4-6 weeks – Wear headband at night; Return to contact sports
  • 1 year – Final healing
*Please note that each patient and case is unique. Nothing in surgery is a guarantee. Please talk with Dr. Street more in person about your individualized surgical plan. All general anesthesia is performed by a board-certified anesthesiologist.
