Melanocytic nevi or “moles” as they are commonly known are collections of pigment producing cells in the skin. These lesions may be present from birth or form throughout life. Although most moles are not dangerous, they can rarely turn into a form of skin cancer called melanoma. When evaluating your moles, it’s important to keep in mind the “ABCDEs” of melanoma below. Should you have concerns about one of your moles it is important to have dermatologist perform an exam.
A = asymmetric
B = irregular border
C = multiple colors
D = diameter larger than a pencil eraser
E = evolution or change (growing, bleeding, itching)
